Elephant

Carved from ethically obtained Giraffe bone on commission, this is approximately 50mm (2 inches) across. The eyes are New Zealand Paua (Abalone) and it's strung on a hand plaited waxed hemp cord with a bone toggle.   The crease across the middle is a naturally occurring flaw in the bone and is only partial depth, it's retained as the depth of the relief could not be manged if the flaw was removed, it's a feature of any wider works that require any depth, this Giraffe bone is the only bone I've found large enough to support this kind of size in a bone carving.
